かぎ【鉤】

〔先の曲がった金具〕 a hook; a crook; a gaff; (いかり･もり･釣り針などの) a fluke; a barb; 〔音符の〕 a flag.

●魚を棒先の鉤で引っかけて舟に揚げる gaff a fish and haul it up into the boat.

●コートを壁の鉤に掛ける hang one's coat on a hook on a wall

・小さい看板がドアの鉤に掛かっている. There's a small sign hanging on a hook on the door.

●鉤のように曲がった hook-shaped; hooked; uncinate(d).

はり【針･鉤】

1 〔縫い針〕 a needle.

●折れた針 a broken needle.

●針状の needle-shaped; acicular; 【植】 acerate; acerose; acerous.

●針が落ちても聞こえるほど静かだった. It was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop.

・落ちていた針が足に刺さった. I pricked my foot on a needle that was lying on the floor.

・足がちくちく針で刺すように痛んだ. I had a stinging pain in my leg.

●針に糸を通す pass a thread through the eye of a needle; thread a needle.

・針の先 the point of a needle

・この生地は針の通りが悪い. This cloth is hard to sew.

2 〔針と似た役目をするもの〕 (虫ピン) a pin; 【鉤】 〔釣り針〕 a hook; 〔編み針〕 a knitting needle; 〔ホッチキスの針〕 a staple.

4 〔時計の〕 a hand 《on the clock》.

●時計の針が 8 時を指している. The hands of the clock are pointing to eight (o'clock). | It's eight o'clock.

・針が 5 時 46 分を指したまま止まった時計 a clock with its hands stopped at five forty-six

・長い針と短い針が重なるのは何時ですか. What time is it when the big hand and the little hand are both pointing to the same number?

5 〔計器などの〕 an index 《pl. ～es, -dices》; an indicator; a pointer.

●磁石の針 the needle of a compass.

●針がゼロを指している. The indicator is pointing to zero.

・針が振り切れる the needle moves off the dial

・針が止まったところで目盛りを読む read the dial [instrument] where the indicator [index, pointer] stops.

6 〔レコードプレーヤー･蓄音機の〕 a (phonograph) needle; a stylus 《pl. -li, ～es》.

●針が擦り減るほど聞いたレコード a record one has listened to often enough to wear out the phonograph needle.

●(プレーヤーの)針を交換する change the needle.

7 〔注射器などの〕 a needle.

10 〔縫った時の針目〕 a stitch; 〔ししゅうなどの〕 a punto 《pl. ～s》.

●1針1針手で縫う handsew one stitch at a time

・傷口[頭]を 3針縫う put three stitches in the wound [head]; sew up the wound [head] with three stitches.

針のむしろ a bed of nails [thorns].

●その 1 時間は針のむしろにすわらされた思いだった. For me, it was like sitting on a bed of nails for an hour.
